Who Is It Traditionally Used For?

Because the database describes it as cool and fluid-promoting, it is traditionally used where there is both qi and yin deficiency with internal heat, such as fatigue with a dry mouth and throat. People who tend to feel cold should be cautious. For regular use, consult a registered Chinese medicine practitioner.

How to Choose

  • 👅 Taste: typically slightly bitter first, then sweet, with a lingering ginseng flavour.
  • 📏 Cut: slices should be intact and even, with few broken pieces.
  • ✋ Dryness: dry and firm, not soft or sticky.
  • 👃 Smell: natural ginseng aroma; avoid anything mouldy or sour.
  • 🏪 Origin and grade have no unified official standard in Hong Kong; follow product labelling and buy from a source that can explain where it comes from.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Profile

Hong Kong Polytechnic University Chinese Herbal Medicine Database: American ginseng (西洋參) is classed as a qi-tonifying medicinal. It is the dried root of Panax quinquefolius (Araliaceae), with a slightly bitter, sweet taste and a cool nature, entering the Heart, Lung and Kidney meridians. Its traditional actions are to tonify qi, nourish yin, clear heat and promote fluid production. Cautions

  • The PolyU database records adverse reactions including allergy, aggravated arrhythmia, insomnia, headache, chest tightness and diarrhoea. Stop and seek medical advice if you feel unwell.
  • The PolyU database states American ginseng should not be used with veratrum (藜蘆).
  • The Hospital Authority warfarin leaflet warns that ginseng (人參) and other Chinese medicines can interact with warfarin. American ginseng belongs to the same Panax genus, so anyone on blood thinners should ask a doctor or pharmacist first.
  • American ginseng is cool in nature. People who feel cold easily, have poor appetite or loose stools should not drink it too often.
  • Pregnant women, children, people with chronic conditions or those on medication should consult a doctor or registered Chinese medicine practitioner first.

Storage Tips

  • Store in a sealed bag or jar in a cool, dry place away from the stove and direct sunlight.
  • Hong Kong is humid, so refrigerate after opening and use clean, dry utensils.
  • Check for mould, insects or off odours before use; discard if found.
  • The Centre for Food Safety advises consuming brewed tea or soup promptly; refrigerate leftovers within two hours and reheat until piping hot.
